Both Michael’s father and brother own and operate successful in-shore commercial fishing boats from Sovereign Harbour. After a short spell in the Royal Navy, Michael decided that fishing was in his blood and joined his father and brother in the family fishing business. Michael now skippers the impressive Talisman day boat and employs a local crew to help him catch a wide range of quality shellfish, including brown crab, whelks and lobster.
Michael was instrumental in setting-up the Fishermen’s CIC and facilitating the new buildings, leases, funding, infrastructure and business opportunities that now exist at Fishermen’s Quay.
Apart from his full-time role as a local skipper and CIC director, Michael’s duties now include helping the team with the management and day-to-day running of the new Quay Fisheries wholesale and retail fish shop and smokery. The next phase of Fishermen’s Quay, the visitor and education centre, is due to start in the late summer of 2021 and Michael is looking forward to the challenge that this will bring.

Chris has been working at the New Economics Foundation (NEF) on fair and sustainable fisheries and a blue new deal for coastal communities since 2011. He has been working with Graham and Michael since 2013 as part of NEFs work to help small scale fishers in the UK access EU funding. Chris, Graham and Michael developed the successful grant application for £1.15 million to develop Phase One of the Quay project and have subsequently also successfully raised loan and grant finance from the SELEP to focus on the coastal heritage and tourism economy.
